What does “T2 hyperintensity” mean on a radiology report?
An area that appears bright on one particular type of MRI image — usually meaning it holds more water than the tissue around it.
Why the radiologist wrote it that way
MRI produces several image types from the same scan, and T2 is the one where fluid shows bright. Calling something T2 hyperintense is a precise description of how it behaved on that sequence, and it is the starting point for working out what the tissue is.
Is this good or bad news?
A technical description rather than a diagnosis. Extra water in tissue accompanies a long list of things, most of them unremarkable — inflammation that has since settled, an old injury, a cyst, or normal age-related change. Radiologists combine several sequences to narrow it down, which is why a single phrase from a report reads as far more ambiguous than the radiologist’s actual conclusion.
